For me the ideal spacing is seven years.I guess because your kids can already play with themselves but still have little guidance. But most of my friends wants a year spacing because for them it is more easier to adjust of taking care of them.

I have 2 sisters. I'm the eldest, the middle child ( 7 years apart) and the youngest (5 years apart). I had trouble adjusting when my sisters were born. I became rebellious and even attempted to run away from home. But as we got older, I appreciated that we were far apart because they really looked up to me as the BIG SISTER. Things go through me first before our parents. I would advice them on how to tell our parents what they want. The down side with us having too far apart is that my parents who are now in their late 50's have to support my sisters who are still in school.

My husband envies me with my sister because they show their respect. Unlike his brothers and sister (2 years apart for each child) they don't see him as the BIG brother and thus no show of respect.
