Meet Our Team!
We are so proud of our team here at Carousel Designs. Diverse, experienced, passionate, talented and perfection-seeking … those are just a few words that come to mind when we think of the folks who work so hard to create the absolute best baby bedding in the industry! Okay, we are obviously biased, but we think you’ll agree as you learn more about the people behind our products – Carousel Designs employees are pretty special.
Our workers hail from all over the world but all of them have made Douglasville, Georgia their home. It’s important to all of us that every item we manufacture is made right here in our factory in the U.S. We’ve been in business for more than 23 years and some of our employees have been with us right from the very start! We keep adding to the team with talented new hires as the business grows, but – experienced or new – the one thing all Carousel Designs employees have in common is passion … passion for quality, for beautiful designs and for creating the very best baby bedding for your little one!
Now, in the spirit of getting to know the people of Carousel Designs, we’d like to introduce you to our mechanic supervisor, Gus!
Where are you from originally?
I grew up in Clint, Texas – 25 miles east of El Paso.
How did you get your start in the industry?
I’ve been in the sewing industry for most of my career. As a young man, I served in the U.S. Navy, but for the past almost-40 years I’ve worked for companies that make garments (shirts and slacks), adult bedspreads and now baby bedding. My specific area of expertise is mechanical. They call me the “sewing machine ninja” around here!
How long have you been with Carousel Designs?
I’ve been with Carousel for three years.
What’s your job title?
I am the lead mechanic at Carousel Designs.
What does that mean, exactly?
I troubleshoot, fix and maintain our sewing machines here at the plant. As you would expect, whenever one of our operators has a mechanical problem, it can lead to a productivity issue for the business. My job is to get in there and get the machine running again as quickly as possible.
I also spend a good amount of time working on upgrading our equipment, trying to make it better than it was when I got here.
What’s the best part of your job?
I’m a tinkerer and I love working with my hands. My job doesn’t feel like work because it’s fun for me. I also enjoy the teaching aspect of my job. There are several young employees who I train and mentor, because they are the next generation of sewing machine mechanics, which is a pretty rare job specialty in this country. I feel good about passing on my knowledge … with so much of the sewing industry having been outsourced overseas, it’s hard to find experienced sewers and mechanics like myself.
What’s the toughest part of your job?
I honestly can’t think of anything tough. This is a good place to be. I enjoy a good rapport with every member of the Carousel Designs team. We have a good team environment and we all work well together.
Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I have three sons and one daughter, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. I love to spend time with my family and fix things for them too!
Complete this sentence: If I weren’t working here, I would be …
Doing nothing! I’d be retired. But I already came out of retirement for this job after I got too bored. If you enjoy what you do, it just doesn’t feel like work.
